…To Bid You Farewell

“Everything must come to an end”
- A eulogy by David “Monkey Bastard” Snusgrop.

As Bilbo Baggins once put it: “I’ve put this off for far too long”. Shortly after its first birthday, it’s time to put Monkey Bastard’s MP3 Blahg to sleep and give it a respectful burial. As a lifelong Nintendo nerd, how fitting to end this with a Super Mario picture.

I could’ve ended this blog gracefully six months ago, but I was too cowardly to let go. I simply wasn’t ready to say goodbye just yet, but I now realise it has to be done. Kind of like having an old, sick pet and you’re too emotional to have it put down.

At the bottom of this post you’ll find the remaining three Monkey Mixes I got uploaded to Snapdrive. Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, I will upload the remaining five mixes I got on my harddrive, and add them to the bottom of this post. Then that will be it. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll post something again, but at the moment it feels unlikely. Perhaps some day I’ll make another Monkey Mix just for the hell of it – if so it will be added to the bottom of this post.

There are a few reasons why this blog has gone down the drain and gotten boring lately. One reason is I went to university in August, which in hindsight has proved to be the first nail in the coffin of this blog. Whenever I wasn’t in school or doing homework, I would work to make ends meet. I didn’t have a lot of time or energy for anything, certainly not for spending hours in front of a computer ripping cds, uploading mp3s and writing pieces on artists.

The main reason is I kinda ran out of bands to write about. The idea of this blog was to spread the word on my favorite music, only the music I felt truly passionate about and I’ve done that now. It was a mistake to make every post on an artist/band so exhaustive. Exhaustive to the point where I would include as many as 10 or 15 mp3s from that artist’s discography. It didn’t leave much for a future post, so once I’d posted about someone, that was it. Plus, I’ve also had a rule about not posting the same people twice, and I’ve only broken that rule once – posts #1 and #34 were both on David Sandström. After a lot of posting (sometimes I’d post several times a day) the list of people to blog about had run out. Most of the bands included in these Monkey Mixes are bands I’ve already done a proper post about in the past, the rest are random tracks I happen to like, not enough to write an individual post about.

Sure, I guess I could keep posting and posting forever, but posting music I’m not passionate about would make it feel fake. No reason to keep something alive simply for the purpose of keeping it alive. I’ve always been the kind of person who does something full on, or not at all.

My intention back in March 2007 was to do the opposite of what most mp3 bloggers do – I wouldn’t do “new” stuff, be the first one to post that brand new mp3 from that brand new hip band that everyone was talking about at the moment. I had no intention to part of the “blogosphere”, I didn’t want to be cutting edge, I wanted to be as far away from the edge as possible. I never even added this blog to the Hype Machine or similar networks, because “getting hits” didn’t matter.

The point was to go against the grain and only post personal stuff from my own record collection, no matter how old it was, no matter how uncool it may have been and no matter if anyone else liked it or not. And now I’ve covered pretty much everything. There is nowhere I can take this blog at this point without changing the spirit of it, something I have no interest in doing.

That’s not saying I’ve posted all the music I love: I’ve always listened to plenty of heavy music, but for some reason I never started posting that here, not sure why. I guess metal, punk, hardcore etc. didn’t fit into the vision I had for this blog. I’ve never lost the inspiration or the desire to run a blog and share music, so when ideas for this one had run out I started a new one in November: Metal Bastard’s MP3 Blahg (link), Monkey Bastard’s evil twin. And with that one I am determined to not make the same mistake I made with this one. On Metal Bastard I only post about one album at a time, instead of covering a band’s entire career in one post, giving it a much greater longevity. I will keep posting there, so stop by if you’re into that kind of music. And if you’re not? Stop by anyway and say hi. :)

When I look at some of these posts in the archives, it feels like years and years ago. Damn, I actually wrote long pieces about people and bands back then… And they’re all brilliantly written too, if I may say so. Johnny Cash, Citizen Bird (aka Silverbullit), Scott Morgan, David Sandström, The Olivia Tremor Control, Locomotives, Teddybears, Neil Diamond, Christian Kjellvander, Sex Gang, The Posies, Leonard Cohen, Hole, The Hives, Gemma Hayes, Roky Erickson, The Crack, Del Shannon, and many other darlings of mine have passed review on this here blog. The epic mammoth posts on Chris Cornell (link), A Brief History Of Swedish Rock (link), and Pink Floyd’s Lost Years (link) remain my favorites to this day. Shit, back then a Monkey Mix was a rarity. Not something I blurted out of myself twice a week because I didn’t have the manners to take the old dog to the vet and quit while I was ahead.

No, instead I put this blog on an iron lung and kept it trucking long past its best-by date, allowing it deteriorate and become more and more pathetic. Last November, after ages of nothing but Monkey Mixies, I made an old-fashioned, long post on The Soundtrack Of Our Lives (link), and I was hoping it would be the first step in some sort of return to form and I would soon start posting proper features on bands again like I used to, but I knew deep down it was the last gasp. A death rattle. The fifteen mp3 links in that TSOOL post still work btw, so go download ‘em, they’re a fantastic band that deserves more listeners.

It feels sad that it’s coming to an end, yet at the same time happy that I finally decided to put an end to it. I’m feeling really melancholy and nostalgic reading some of the early posts in the archives. If you have a few minutes, have a look at them, they’re a pretty good read. Also, every Monkey Mix from Volume 50 onwards are still downloadable, so go the archives in the sidebar and check those out as well – each one is full of golden little musical nuggets from every era and genre imaginable. All in all, over 1.5 gb of great music! More than enough to keep you entertained for a long, long time.

While writing that last paragraph I realised I was breaking another rule I had set up for myself: to keep this blog entirely about the music and not about me. I’ve seen so many bloggers pouring their hearts out in the most narcissistic ways possible that I always tried to keep from getting too personal and up close, to the point where I never even gave away my real name until this post, instead opting for hiding behind the music geek alter ego Monkey Bastard. Since this is the last post, I figured the least I could do was introduce myself. Hi, I’m David, nice to meet ya. Not that my name matters. I mean… Is anyone really reading this?

That’s a whole lotta text, so if you plowed through it all, you have my utmost respect. It’s been a good year, full of great music and I hope I’ve turned you on to at least one or two good bands, and introduced you to a couple of good songs you hadn’t heard before. If so, my work here is done. Thank you for everything, and see y’all at Metal Bastard’s MP3 Blahg! :)

Update July 22nd 2008:

Alright, any astute readers will have noticed by now I couldn’t help myself but post more mixes. I don’t what to tell ya, I can’t help it! I’m a mix nerd, it’s in my DNA. ‘Tis unescapable. The blahg is still officially dead though, so consider any updates to be 100% hush hush and under the table. If you pretend they don’t happen, so will I.

I check in a few times a week, so feel free leave comments with opinions, praise, criticism and perhaps even suggestions.

Volume 105 has no track 14, because I couldn’t find a song that would fit there. It just felt better with a gap before the last track.

So without further ado, here’s another eleven mixes, they are all extremely highly recommended (escpecially volumes 98, 102 and 103):

Post #122 – Monkey Bastard’s Mix Vol 71

Monkey Bastard’s Spanktacular Meatballs! (they’re cooking in the oven right now and spelling heavenly)

500g minced beef
One red onion, diced finely
One carrot, grated finely
One egg
Breadcrumbs
3 dl bulgur (leave in water overnight to swell)
50-100g pre-fried finely diced bacon

If you live in some backwoods, uncivilized part of the world where the metric system still isn’t in use: Figure those measurements out yourself.

Mix all the above ingredients in a bowl, season with rosemary, coriander, a little bit of garlic and salt & pepper. Make the meatballs any size you like (I like big balls myself… *cough cough*) and in put them in the oven for 40-45 minutes (depending on the size), 175 degrees Celsius. What that is in Fahrenheit, I have no idea. Get with the program, neanderthals. Ten minutes before they’re done, take ‘em out, pour grated parmesan (or some other strong cheese) on top, and put ‘em back in.

Serve with a salad and some red wine (I suggest Santa Ines from Chile, strong and full without being heavy and will a divine hint of black currants). If you can’t find it, just pick a nice Cab Sauv. Enjoy, bitches. And download the new Mix – excellent background music whilst cooking Monkey Bastard’s Spanktacular Meatballs!
