Alright assholes, let’s do this.

Track #1: A b-side from circa 1998-99.

Track #2: A minor hit in Sweden in the mid 90′s. The lead singer Nina Ramsby would later…

Track #3: …make much more mellow music with Soundtrack Of Our Lives pianist Martin Hederos.

Track #4: From 1994′s Definitely Maybe.

Track #5: Seeing how much jazz I listen to, I’m surprised I haven’t posted more of it. This is from the 1959 classic Kind Of Blue.

Track #6: A weird band from England that broke up last year. This is song is from 2002/03.

Track #7: An even better English band that also, sadly, parted ways very recently. This is from their 2002 masterpiece See This Through And Leave.

Track #8: Jay-Jay is perhaps best known for his guest appearance on The Knife’s Silent Shout album. This is a remix/re-recording of his 1996 song.

Track #9: From Bone Machine (1993). For more Tom Waits, scroll down.

Track #10: Short-lived, semi-obscure Swedish garage rock band. This is the title track from a single released in 1997.

Track #11: From 1997′s Medazzaland.

Track #12: From 1962′s Moanin’ In The Moonlight

Track #13: From 2003′s Deep Cuts.

Track #14: From her 2005 selftitled debut album.

Track #15: Yet another crimanally overlooked English band. That might change now that they’ve had songs of theirs included in shows like One Tree Hill and Grey’s Anatomy. From 2003′s Satellites.

The next Monkey Mix will be posted on Friday (or at least that’s the plan). It will include Johnny Cash, Captain Beefheart, Al Green, Jeff Buckley, Bruce Springsteen etc etc etc. And yes, it’s just as good as it sounds. And no, you can’t possibly live without it.

One last thing: The pic above is from the movie Buffalo 66, from 1998. It easily one of the best films ever made. Do yourself a favor and see it if you haven’t. And if you have? See it again.

Post #92 – The Tom Waits Compilation #1

I was gonna post Monkey Mix volume 43 two days ago, but Blog.com was being an ass. I tried yesterday, and it kept acting like an ass. So that Monkey Mix will have to wait ’til Friday, but what better way to keep you entertained with an another mix of sorts. Monkey Bastard gives you *drumroll* the first Tom Waits compilation!

As for who Tom Waits is, what he’s done and all that jazz, I don’t have time to get into it. I will simply refer you to his info page on Wikipedia. For additional info I strongly recommend The Tom Waits Library, which contains everything you will ever need to know.

I’ve been a huge Tom Waits fan for years, but for some reason I only got around to actually buying his albums about a year ago, and when I did I bought the bulk of his discography. For years I only had the Swordfishtrombones album and a compilation called Asylum Years. The rest of his discography existed on downloaded mp3s and tapes of friends’ cds.

This compilation I’m offering you to download today is based on a mix tape I made in November last year (yes, I still make those), and it’s taken on a life of its own by now. I listen to in my walkman (yes, I still have one of those) whenever I’m out and about, and it turned out so well I had to share it. I omitted a couple of tracks from the 90 minutes mixtape so make it fit onto a CDR (if you’re one of the few people who make those… I’m one of them). This meant Goodnight Irene, The Piano Has Been Drinking, Jersey Girl and Two Sisters had to go, but I’ll save them for the second volume in this Tom Waits series. I haven’t made the second volume yet, but I have a good feeling what songs to include and I’ll get around to it when I fucking feel like it.

If any Tom Waits fans read this, the track listing may look a little odd so perhaps I should explain myself. Many of the songs you would expect to see on a Waits compilation aren’t here, and the focus is on Waits’ more abrasive, weird stuff of the 80′s and 90′s. There aren’t many songs pre-Swordfishtrombones (his folk/jazz/quasi-beatnik era): Ol’ 55, Please Call Me Baby, Pasties And A G-String, Presents and Candy Apple Red are the only representatives of this era. Not because I have anything against this era, I damn well love it in fact, but at the time I made that mix tape I was simply drawn more to the noisy, less commercial stuff. Swordfishtrombones from 1983 is often referred to as his best album, and I only included one song from it (Trouble Braids), because I had owned the album for years and wanted to include mostly stuff from all the new Tom Waits albums I had just bought. Also, there are no songs from Alice, Blood Money or Real Gone because I didn’t get around to buying those albums until about four months later. But no worries, Waits fans: Songs from the albums that aren’t covered here, will be included on Vol. 2.

I’m actually very proud of this mix, I think it works beautifully as a whole. Much thought was put into it and not just a bunch of random songs thrown together, it actually has a really nice flow with all the dynamics in the right places. Which is why it might take me while to post Vol. 2 – I want to make sure it’s as good as this one before I unleash it unto the world.

Finally, I can not stress enough the importance of supporting recording artists and paying for it. Whether you click the links below and order the actual cds, or whether you buy them off Itunes or whatever, I don’t care. This is the case of a true, genuine artist who puts his heart and soul into his music, not some flakey moron throwing some tracks together to sell albums and make a quick buck. Tom Waits is the real deal. If you like what you hear, buy his albums. If you don’t, delete the mp3s from your harddrive. Got it? Good.

Damn… Nothing but lazy ass Mixes for over a month. Work and university horseshit are finally slowing down, so maybe (just maybe) I’ll be able to post normally again. But for now, I’m here to give you your soundtrack for the weekend.

Track #1: Swedish 60′s pop nugget.

Track #2: Norwegian retro psych rock.

Track #3: Swedish punk/pop/rock/new wave/whatever. This is from an early demo, the band has since been signed to a label and released albums under a new name. Can’t remember what the new name is though.

Track #4: Another Swedish 60′s pop nugget.

Track #5: My favorite track from the Fight Club soundtrack.

Track #6: Easily one of the best bands in the world. From the Amputechture album that came out last year.

Track #7: Yet another Swedish 60′s pop nugget.

Track #8: A sweet and very gay duet.

Track #9: Another Swedish demo band, from 2001 or so. Whether these dudes are still around, I have no idea. Lots of Ramones influences on this one.

Track #10: American 60′s pop nugget. Or is it 70′s…? Big dif.

Track #11: Swedish 2002 pop nugget.

Track #12: A bittersweet symphony.

Track #13: An early kinda-rare Hives song, probably from around 1997-98. Not officially released on any album.

Track #14: Swedish surf rock extravaganza!

Track #15: Spooky weirdness from a weirdo.

Alright, that’ll do. Better get going, I just got a shipment of DVDs to watch. And no, they’re not porn! (not all of them…)
