Well, it seems like the Simpsons movie is finally coming out. I've always liked the show, but I'm hardly a superfan who has seen every episode (I don't think I've even seen half of them). I'd buy the DVDs if I weren't spending my money on other (more important) things.

The Simpsons Sing The Blues was released in 1990, and the first single Do The Bartman (written by everyone's favorite kiddie fiddler) was a global hit. The second single, Deep Deep Trouble, also did well, but these songs perhaps gave people a skewed impression of the album. As the title implies, the majority of it consists of our beloved Springfieldians (is that a word?) tackling old blues classics. Homer croons away in Born Under A Bad Sign, then pairs up with Marge in Randy Newman's I Love To See You Smile. Lisa takes on Billie Holidays' God Bless The Child and Marge cooks up a Springfield Soul Stew. But the high point by far is Mr. Burns singing about being "outnumbered by boobs". Fuck, man... I feel so lazy. I'm always annoyed when bloggers only update once a week or so, but I'm beginning to understand them. I've been really busy with work lately (working full time for thirteen days straight does not put you in a blogging mood), so I'm glad I have these bi-weekly Monkey Mixes to fall back on, because they involve no effort on my part since they were made months in advance.

You see, after I posted the first one (which is fucking amazing by the way, go download it) back in April I got so inspired I made like 35 of them over just a few days! If you make a wise choice and download this mix, just check the dates. This shit may be good, but it ain't fresh. As far as you are concerned, dear reader, we've only reached volume 29 so far but just the other day I finished volume 52! It's amazing, it has The Pogues, Louis Armstrong, Amy Winehouse, The Platters, Stiff Little Fingers, and much much more. I listen to it all time whenever I'm on the computer, but you can't hear it for another twelve weeks. Damn, it gotta suck to be you.

Okay, on to your soundtrack for the upcoming weekend. I like to refer to this as The Fireside Edition.

Track #1: In a Monkey Mix post a while back I mentioned how the only good Depeche Mode covers were Failure's Enjoy The Silence and Fireside's The Sun And The Rainfall. That particular mix contained the former, this one has the latter. Taken from their b-side compilation Hello Kids (1998).

Track #2: I've been meaning to do a lenghty, career spanning post on Seattle's pop heroes The Posies for quite some time, but I never seem to get around to it. This is from my favorite Posies album, 1996's Amazing Grace.

Track #3: Recorded in 1969, released in 1970. Is it just me or does Kris sound an awful lot like Leonard Cohen on this one?

Track #4: German footballer turned football coach trying to sing.

Track #5: Much more on the genius that is Roky Erickson here.

Track #6: From Faith No More's best album, 1995's impeccable masterpiece King For A Day... Fool For A Lifetime.

Track #7: The opening track on Foo Fighters' 1999 album There Is Nothing Left To Lose. Pretty much the only rocking song on that mellow, kinda boring album.

Track #8: Another song by Fireside, this time an original. From 1995's Do Not Tailgate.

Track #9: Alice In Chains' contribution to the awesome/terrible (I can't decide) Arnold Schwarzenegger film The Last Action Hero.

Track #10: A 1958 classic. Short and sweet.

Track #11: British band that had some success with this song in the mid 90's. They have since replaced their female singer with a male and now sound like shit. This is a remix by Nellee Hooper, possibly best known for producing Björk's Debut (1993).

Track #12: A British glam rock band that was fronted by the dork who knocked up Liv Tyler. This was their only hit, from 1995.

Track #13: A live ZZ Top cover, with Mark Lanegan on lead vocals.

Track #14: A British duo consisting of two former members of Lush. This was released as a sinlgle in 1998.

Track #15: The third and last Fireside track. A Prince cover (!), also from Hello Kids (1998).

EDIT: Okay, I'm back. Let's do this:

Track #1: A "rare" outtake recorded in 1979, taken from Springsteen's boxset Tracks, released in 1998

Track #2: From the soundtrack to the amazingly shitty film The Crow: City Of Angels (1996).

Track #3: One of the best songs by one of the best bands of the 60's. From their self-titled 1967 debut album.

Track #4: I'm the kinda guy who locks himself indoors with a book on a sunny day, and is bored senseless by partying and pointless festivities. Therefore, any song that contains the line "Fuck St. Patty's Day" is fine with me. This is a b-side from Descendents' single I'm The One (1997).

Track #5: Criminally underrated and overlooked track from Beck's 1996 masterpice Odelay.

Track #6: Fantastically sentimental Swedish band I love to listen to when I'm too drunk to know any better.

Track #7: At The Drive-In was an incredibly overrated band. Sure, they had tons of great songs but they were grossly outnumbered by the vast amount of shitty songs, and when they finally released an album that was great from beginning to end (2000's Relationship Of Command), they called it a day. This is one of the best ones, a b-side on the Rolodez Propaganda single (2000).

Track #8: Brilliant teamwork from Primus' 1991 album Sealing The Seas Of Cheese. Tom Waits obviously liked working with these guys, as he has kept hiring them as back-up musicians on his own albums ever since.

Track #9: Also from the The Crow: City Of Angels soundtrack.

Track #10: Proof that Madonna is at her best when she does no-bullshit ballads instead being an overproduced, over the hill, disco dancing soccer mom.

Track #11: In an interview with Q Magazine in 2005, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl was asked what his favorite and least favorite Nirvana songs were. His favorite was Heart Shaped Box (fair enough, although I never liked it that much), and his least favorite was this one, Lounge Act from Nevermind (1991). He called it "a total filler" or something like that. I love Dave Grohl and nearly everything he's ever done, but trust me: he was talking out of his ass. Lounge Act has been my favorite Nirvana song ever since I first heard it nearly sixteen years ago, and it deserves more attention. I mean, just listen to the delicate bassline intro, the deceptively simple riff, the desperation in Kurt's voice when he screams the last verse. That's fucking class, people. That's fucking class.

Track #12: Ryan Adams' Gold (2001) was one of the first true timeless masterpieces of the new millenium, and this was the best song on it.

Track #13: I've always been a bit torn when it comes to The Lemonheads' 1996 album Car Button Cloth. I find half of the tracks near flawless, and the other half does nothing for me. This is one of the better ones, written for the band by Tom Morgan.

Track #14: A b-side from 1975 (although recorded as early as 1971) that got a crap movie named after it.

Anyone who's familiar with the Auto Club knows the band is a little dangerous, a little wonderful and a little goofy. And the son of a preacher has filled the Auto Club's songs with lyrics about sin and salvation.

"It comes from the fact that it's really hard for me to think about anything else," Cessna says. "Even though the songs aren't meant to be some kind of statement, just from the fact that I'm trying to find words that rhyme together they end up being about things I'm thinking about, which is often God and salvation."

One of the Auto Club's crowd favorites, "My Last Song About Satan," is a humorous ode about getting the devil off the proverbial shoulder.

I was at the Lion's Lair and who should I sit next to there but Satan/He ordered me a beer and he looked me in the eye/He said he was my friend/I knew that was a lie/He's the man behind my sins/…/Goddamn, I hate him… so this is my last song about Satan.

"Having been raised in the church, you can't get rid of it no matter what. And it drives me crazy, actually," Cessna says about Protestant ideas of God and God's pitchfork-carrying nemesis.

Cessna's beer-in-one-hand-Bible-in-the-other stage presence probably isn't exactly what his father would have had in mind if he had ever wanted Slim to follow in his footsteps. But the old man must have passed a bit of the rebel nature on to him.

"He's got that sailor side," Cessna says of his dad, who pastored a church in Boulder for years, ran a street mission for youth in Denver, and just returned from two years as a missionary in Nigeria. "Sometimes he pulls me aside and says, 'I'm proud of you son, keep raisin' hell.'"

Right here in his very space I had written quite a long elaborate piece on The Hives' amazing 2004 album Tyrannosaurus Hives, and how sad it was that the album wasn't as highly praised as their breakthrough album Veni Vidi Vicious (2000). There was also a little something about how unfair it was to lump The Hives together with The Strokes, The Vines, The White Stripes etc, under the same inaccurate "garage rock" umbrella. But as fate would have it, just as I was about to click the "Publish" button, Blog.com fucked up on me, crashed my browser and thus deleting a text it took me nearly an hour to write. Thank you, Blog.com. You never cease to astonish me.
