Track #1: THE seminal Stone Roses track. The opener on their 1989 selftitled debut album.

Track #2: From their brilliant 2001 album Her, The City Et Al. Ever heard of Christian Kjellvander? Well, he was the frontman of this band before going solo.

Track #3: From 2002's Blood Money.

Track #4: A sadly overlooked Liverpool band. From their 1999 album HMS Fable.

Track #5: A number 1 hit in 1968.

Track #6: From Summerteeth (1999).

Track #7: Huge hit in 1965.

Track #8: A b-side from 1969 that became a big success in its own right. Later released as an a-side single.

Track #9: From his glorious 2001 album Here Be Monsters.

Track #10: Anyone one when this was recorded/released? All my sources claim different dates. Great song nonetheless.

Track #11: From The Magical World Of The Strands (1997). Mick Head is also the lead singer of Shack.

Track #12: Classic garage rock from the album I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night) (1967).

Track #13: I've already gone into a "Marah sucks" rant once before on this blog, so I won't repeat any of it. This is Marah's only good song, but it's damn good. From Kids In Philly (2000).

Track #14: Don't know anything about this band. They were Swedish and recorded an album (maybe two) in the late 90's.

Track #15: From 2001's Asleep In The Back.

...And once again I feel like such a lazy bastard. Once upon a time I had such big plans for this blog... And it has now been reduced to two posts a week. Two Monkey Mixes a week, and that's it. You probably don't mind, dear reader. Nearly every email and comment I get are from readers telling me how much the appreciate the Monkey Mixes, which delights me. But still, I feel lazy. I will try to get more creative soon (for example, I've been planning a big Soundtrack Of Our Lives post for a month or so, but I never seem to get around to it), but I now to university full time, and whenever I don't go to school, I work to make ends meet. Not much time for blogging. I promise I will do better. Onto this week's Monday Mix:

Track #1: A 16 Horsepower cover.

Track #2: Don't know anything about this dude. But I like his song.

Track #3: A kickass song from my 3rd favorite mp3 blog: Via: Captain's Crate.

Track #4: Quirky Swedish noise rock. Kinda.

Track #5: Anyone who's seen Shaun Of The Dead will smirk when they hear this one.

Track #6: Nasty Dan was a nasty man.

Track #7: SNL nugget.

Track #8: One of the vocalists and guitarists of The Posies going solo. For more on The Posies, click here (highly recommended post).

Track #9: Don't know a damn thing about Closer. They're Swedish though. That's about all the info I can give ya.

Track #10: The theme song to the best western ever made.

Track #11: A rockin' b-side.

Track #12: A song from my 2nd favorite mp3 blog: Dans Mon Café,

Track #13: A song from my #1 favorite mp3 blog: The Rising Storm.

Track #14: A scorcher from their second album, imaginatively titled Led Zeppelin II.

Track #15: Is Song 2 the only Blur song you know? I pity you, fool!

Alright, that'll do for now. The mix on Friday will include Tom Waits, The Stone Roses, Sly & The Family Stone, Jonathan Richman, Wilco, Elbow and The Byrds. Be there!

Post #82 - The Friday Monkey Mix Vol. 33

Well folks, apparently there's been some technical problems.

As a reader informed me, volumes 1-9 of the Monkey Mixes are currently unavailable. That's because they are hosted by Filexoom who are going through some pretty heavy duty server changes. They will (according to Filexoom anyway) be back up again in a week or two. I have also been informed that the zip file for Vol. 30 is the same as the one for Vol. 31. Unfortunately I can't blame anyone for this (not even Filexoom). It's simply due a mistake on my part. I was going to upload the right zip file yesterday, but it appeared I had deleted it from my harddrive. I honestly can't be arsed to rip all those cd's and create the mix all over again, so unless I find the zip file somewhere on my computer, you're just gonna have to live without Vol. 30. Too bad, 'cause it was pretty damn good...

I've been working like a motherfarter lately and been a bit off balance. Yesterday I zoned out completely and thought it was Thursday. So since today is Friday in my little world, it's time for another Monkey Mix:

1. Misery Loves Co. - Your vision was never mine to share
2. Keith Caputo - Honeycomb
3. Pearl Jam - Leatherman
4. Anathema - Don't look too far
5. Tom Waits - Hoist that rag
6. The Butthole Surfers - Who was in my room last night?
7. Amorphis - Divinity
8. Eagles Of Death Metal - Cherry cola
9. Skid Row - Youth gone wild
10. The Damned - Neat, neat, neat
11. Johnny Tillotson - Poetry in motion
12. The Kingsmen - Louie Louie
13. The Chordettes - Mister Sandman
14. Billy Lee Riley - Red hot
15. The Shirelles - Will you still love me tomorrow

If the soundtrack to my early 90's was Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Metallica, the soundtrack to my late 90's was Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Hole and Seattle pop kings The Posies. My first encounter was a live show recorded in early 1996 (on the European leg of their Amazing Disgrace tour) at the club Gino in Stockholm which aired on the Swedish radio station P3 a month or so later. Having read glowing reviews of Amazing Disgrace, The Posies got my attention and I made sure to tape the show (I still have the tape!) and I've lost count of how many times I've listened to it. From the opening chords of Dream All Day to the Nirvana/Jimi Hendrix/The Who style instrument destruction at the end of Burn & Shine, every damn second was mesmerizing.

In the summer of 1996 I was 14 years old and deemed not old enough to stay at home alone when the parents went on vacation to Dalarna in their old caravan, so I had no choice but to tag along. That summer, the tape of the Gino show became my one trusted ally against the entire world (or at least it felt that way, but it always feels that way when you're 14, doesn't it?). I bought Amazing Disgrace at a big department store chain called OBS!, but alas I could not listen to it straight away for my parents did not own a cd player, and I had to wait two long, painful weeks until I could pop it into my stereo system at home and crank up the volume. But at least I could listen to some of the songs on my new favorite tape - Throwaway, Precious Moments, Please Return It, Everybody Is A Fucking Liar, World and Grant Hart were all played at that Gino show. Grant Hart (named after the drummer in Hüsker Dü) quickly became my favorite song and I remember being a bit disappointed when I came home and realised the album version didn't sound as rough and pissed off. One day, when I figured out how to rip a cassette tape and make mp3's out of it, I'm gonna post that whole damn show, because it's beyond belief. Maybe it's just adolescent nostalgia speaking, but it really is one of the best thing I have ever heard. Ever.

After listening to Amazing Disgrace 24/7 for months, I ordered the two previous albums, Dear 23 (1990) and Frosting On The Beater (1993), from the mail order service MBM (Music By Mail), which in those days provided me with all the great music I couldn't otherwise get a hold of in this shitty little pre-Internet town of mine. A few years later their fifth album Success was released, and it was announced this was The Posies' last album. The stopped by Stockholm again in the summer of 1998 to play a gig at the Stockholm Water Festival. I planned to attend, but nothing ever came of it. The two singers, guitarists, frontmen and song writers Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer soon thereafter went their separete ways, both persuing solo projects. After a while though, the former best friends gravitated back towards each other and started doing acoustic gigs as a duo (documented on the In Case You Didn't Feel Like Plugging In live album). Soon they had formed a new band with a new rhythm section and released new material. To be honest, by then I had lost interest. I haven't heard their post reunion stuff (but then again I haven't even heard their debut album Failure either), but I'm sure they are brilliant. It's just that to me, The Posies died in 1999. I guess I outgrew them or something.

Here follows three songs each from of the four Posies albums that shaped my late teens:

Dear 23, 1990 (aka "The Pretty Album")

Any other way
Everyone moves away
Flood of sunshine (highly recommended!)

Frosting On The Beater, 1993 (aka "The Best Album")

Love letter boxes
How she lied by living
Coming right along (highly recommended!)

Amazing Disgrace, 1996 (aka "The Bitter Album")

Ontario
Song #1
Precious moments (highly recommended!)

Success, 1998 (aka "The Farewell Album")

Grow
Fall song
Every bitter drop (highly recommended!)

Another Friday, another essential Monkey Mix. Not to turn this into Monkey Bastard's Movie Corner or anything, but Amelie is one of my favorite films of all time, and this mix was made at a time when I listened to the soundtrack album compulsively and I just had to include two tracks from it (tracks 6 and 12).

Track #1: The Smashing Pumpkins' best song, from 1993's Siamese Dream.

Track #2: A semi-obscure soul legend. The opening track from his 1964 album The New Folk Sound Of Terry Callier.

Track #3: With a name like Brick, how can you play anything but punishing noise rock? From their 1997 masterpiece Volvoland.

Track #4: An early live recording.

Track #5: The latest star on the Swedish Pop Star Hype Mp3 Blog Night Sky (yes, there is such a thing, believe it or not).

Track #6: From the soundtrack to Amelie.

Track #7: No one will agree with me on this, but Nick Cave's best album is 1996's Murder Ballads. Every track on it is memorable, and this is one of them.

Track #8: If you've been paying attention you'd know that Opeth is the band that means the most to me. This is a cheesy tongue-in-cheek side project from their frontman Mikael Åkerfeld.

Track #9: How many bass/drums/saxophone combos do you know of? One, exactly. The ultimate Morphine song, from 1993's Cure For Pain.

Track #10: Shouldn't need any introduction to the avid blog reader.

Track #11: "Provocative" female solo electro performer.

Track #12: Also from the soundtrack to Amelie.

Track #13: For more on Mary Beats Jane and their frontman Peter Dolving's solo capades, click here.

Track #14: One of the best Swedish bands of the last 15 years (and I'd like to think that's really saying something - we produce a lotta great shit). From their best album, 2003's It's Golden.

Track #15: The best Swedish band of the 70's (and that's also saying something). From their 1971 album 2:a November.

Alright, that's all yer gonna get for now. Tomorrow I will post twelve songs by The Posies, three each from my favorite four albums of theirs and on Monday there will be another Monkey Mix, one with a heavy 70's slant. The Doobie Brothers, Melanie, Toto, Mott The Hoople, Nazareth, America, Terry Jacks... 100% retro and (as always) 100% amazing. Be there or be square, bee-yotches.
